Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal Part 1

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

On May 27, the 1st step toward ending the policy that allows gays to serve in the military only if they do not close their sexual orientation was finally taken by Senate committee. The Senate Armed Services Committee approved, with a vote 16-12, a provision to repeal the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, the only Republican to vote for the amendment to a defense spending bill, said it passed after “vigorous and aggressive debate.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., who promoted the measure with Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., said: “It’s time for this policy to go. It doesn’t reflect America’s best values of equal opportunity, and it’s not good for the military.”

Repealing the 1993 law, a priority of gay rights groups that President Barack Obama has pledged to pursue, still faces a tough road.

The full House is expected to take up the identical amendment late May 27th or 28th and opposition is fierce, particularly among Republicans who cited letters from military service chiefs urging Congress to hold off on the legislation until the Pentagon completes a study of the impact on military life and readiness.

The measure could face a filibuster when it reaches the Senate floor.

“I think it’s really going to be very harmful to the morale and effectiveness of our military,” said Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee and a leading opponent of the repeal.

Still, the vote was welcomed by gay-rights groups. “This is the beginning of the end of a shameful ban on open service by lesbian and gay troops that has weakened our national security,” said Joe Solmonese, president of Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay-rights organization.

Do you need cigarette and can’t smoke where you work? ‘We need to get this done’

In the House, debate on “don’t ask, don’t tell” dominated an all-day session on a bill that approves more than $700 billion for military operations.

Democrats stressed that the measure was a compromise under which the repeal would not go into effect until the Pentagon completes its study, expected in December, and until Obama and military leaders certify that it would not adversely affect the military’s ability to fight.

Republicans countered by reading similar letters written by the heads of the military services asking Congress to wait.

“I also believe that repealing the law before the completion of the review will be seen by the men and women of the Army as a reversal of our commitment to hear their views before moving forward,” wrote Gen. George Casey, head of the Army.

Congress going first “is the equivalent to turning to our men and women in uniform and their families and saying, ‘Your opinion, your view, do not count,’” said Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon of California, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee.

But Rep. Jared Polis, an openly gay Democrat from Colorado, said most Americans “recognize that on the battlefield, it doesn’t matter if a soldier is lesbian, gay or straight. What matters is they get the job done for our country.”

Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Pennsylvania Democrat who served in the Iraq war and who is the chief sponsor of the amendment, said, “We need to get this done, and we need to get it done now.”

The Senate panel’s vote of approval was sealed when Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, a conservative Democrat, endorsed it earlier this week. He said then a provision in the bill giving the military the power to decide on the details of implementing the policy was key to his support because it “removes politics from the process” and ensures repeal is “consistent with military readiness and effectiveness.”

Advocates hoped the momentum in the Senate would carry over to the House, where several conservative Democrats, including Rep. Gene Taylor of Mississippi, threatened to oppose the massive defense spending bill if it included the repeal.

My Take: These guys can’t seem to agree on anything anymore! They probably even argue over new or used copiers for their offices. And that is even if they only need replacement parts. What these guys need to do is what their wives do when they’re frustrated and that is a little aromatherapy with wickless candles. Maybe soaking in a nice hot tub will make them relax. They wouldn’t even have to worry about lighting the candle because Scentsy candles have no wick to light.

The only thing politicians ever agree on is there annual wage increase in net that the beginning of the session. Maybe if they had house or techno music playing in the background might be able to agree on something. I’m sure you know the kind of music I’m talking about; it’s the kind of music at the Santos NYC club.

Right now the only thing these politicians are worried about are the votes they won’t get if they do the wrong thing!

Visit the Roman Colosseum’s Gladiator Chambers

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Cited: ABC News

There is something new to see in Rome this summer, something old. Tourists will be able to see what the gladiator saw of the Roman Colosseum that have never before been open to the public. Visitors will be able to descend to the bank gets of the world’s biggest ancient amphitheater and climbed the steep steps to the highest level where they will be able to admire the majestic views over the arena. The Roman Forum and Arch of Constantine can be viewed from these heights just next door.

Thanks to special government funds, conservation projects are underway at what is arguably the world’s most famous monument to shore up areas that have been closed for decades, and allow access to visitors. Particularly fascinating is the warren of underground chambers and passageways that housed the animals, gladiators, machines and scenery that made up the greatest show on earth two-thousand years ago.

Soon, small groups of visitors with a guide will enter the Colosseum through the back entrance known as the Porta Libidinaria — where in Roman times the gladiators made their grand entrance into the arena — and take a glass elevator down into the bowels of the arena. There, with some imagination, you can picture the noisy, smelly chaos of animals and men preparing for showy battle.

The area opening to the public is under a modern reconstruction of the floor of the Colosseum that was built with steel beams in the year 2000. The original was built of wood, and covered with sand. Under this roof visitors get a feel for what it was like to be in the underground area where wild animals and gladiators waited their turn in what was the backstage of the biggest spectacle in the world at the time.

“The public will be able to visit this area for the first time in August or September,” says Barbara Nazzaro, the architect in charge of the still-to-be completed restoration under the Colosseum, “and they will see the area under the arena where people worked all day to put on the show.”

Lions, tigers, buffalo, gazelles, ostriches and more were brought into the Colosseum through an underground tunnel and locked in cells before being hoisted up in one of the 80 elevators to the stage above, appearing as if by magic in different corners of the arena (elephants used the ground-level entrance) .

“They were very appreciated by the public,” says Nazzaro, “but many wild animals disappeared in this period” to satisfy the Roman audience. She shows you the holes in the cells through which the animals were poked so they would enter the elevator cages. Gladiators and scenery were also lifted to the surface with pulleys.

If you are going to Rome for your honeymoon . . . For CA wedding decorations, one company has it all. Your happiness is there ultimate goal. They can help you perfect the details of your wedding, from the San Diego wedding centerpieces to the wedding table decorations. They are the most dependable and dedicated team for wedding services, covering everything from wedding decorations to wedding corsages in San Diego and all other locations in Southern California.

In its early days the Colosseum was even flooded with water and naval battles were re-enacted for an excited public, according to Rosella Rea, the archeologist in charge of the monument. She says the long vaulted galleries you see underground housed the ships. The water that was used for the naval battles — and, more gruesomely, to wash away the blood and dirt of battle — came from an underground stream that was channeled by the Romans and still flows through the site.

Colosseum shows, with as many as 80,000 spectators, were all-day events featuring hunts and battles, and were offered free to the people by the Roman emperor. At the end of the day, the emperor would distribute the meat from the dead animals to the public according to precise rules, says Rea.

The emperor himself would always get the elephant tusks, the senators and officials the choice meats, and the leftovers were left for the plebes.

Much as in a modern baseball stadium, there were merchants selling food and drink, and archeologists have even found small cooking stoves that must have been used to prepare meals, says Rea.

Also being opened to visitors this summer is a section of the third tier of the amphitheater, the highest section still standing. It offers a different perspective on the cavea, or pit of the arena, as well as spectacular views over the Palatine and the Forum all the way down to Piazza Venezia, where, with construction materials quarried for the Colosseum, the Palazzo Venezia was built in the 15th century.

This is where the middle class sat, says Rea, with the emperors and senators in the best ground-level seats and the plebeians in the peanut gallery on top. On the way to the third level visitors will be able to admire the only original vaulted passageway leading to the seats that is still standing.

Rome’s Ancient Monuments

In June 2009 the Italian government named a special commissioner and provided him with emergency funds for urgent repair to the ancient monuments in Rome , many of which are in a sorry state of conservation. A part of Nero’s famed Golden House caved in at Easter, and most recently a chunk of ceiling plaster fell from one of the galleries in Colosseum, dragging protective netting with it.

The equivalent of just under $2 million were allotted to the Colosseum, which is a small windfall for a monument with an annual budget of only $900,000 and a technical staff of just three people. They are spending the funds to “accelerate” a series of essential restorations they had already planned, says Rea. “If we could always work at this pace, it would be ideal,” she says.

Restorers have been hard at work since January cleaning and restoring travertine columns and ancient bricks. “All old things can use a face-lift,” says Nazzaro with a smile, “and this monument is particularly old, with a lot of problems.” They will be finished by the end of July.

It is going to cost $25 million to fully restore and clean the whole monument and the government is looking for outside sponsors who are willing to contribute to the endeavor.

—————————————————————–

My Take: Wow, it’s about time. If I ever did get a chance to visit Rome that would be one of the things I would want to see, the Colosseum and all of its hidden secrets. I would also get one of their famous Italian linens tablecloths. I understand they are masterfully crafted.

I also want to taste their authentic Italian sauce just to see if it is better than what I have tasted in the US. I would think it would be, but you never know. My best friend is Italian and she can make the best sauce! She got the recipe from her father who was worst generation US Italian. Her grandmother had an Italian linen tablecloth and it was beautiful.

I might just join one of those US volunteer programs to get to Italy. They have several overseas volunteer programs as well. I could volunteer in Bolivia if I really wanted to, but I really don’t want to go to Bolivia. It doesn’t really matter which country I would choose, I definitely would take my electronic cigarette with me because the flights are non-smoking and so are the airports. I would have to make sure that I took my electronic cigarette cartridges with me as well so I would have plenty on my trip.

Tanning Tips for the Summer

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Cited: ABC News

Those were basking in indoor tanning salons may have second thoughts about handing when they see the new report about possible connection between tanning beds and skin cancer. The large case-control study published May 27 the by American Association of Cancer Research found that indoor tanning was associated with a 74% higher risk of skin cancer. Researchers indicated that a fourfold increased risk of skin cancer was associated with indoor tanning machines

To help keep your skin safe this summer, “Good Morning America” spoke to dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, who offered the following dos and don’ts.

Do: Avoid Tanning Beds

In addition to the study noted above, Day said the idea that a base tan protects you is not true. You may not burn as quickly, but you still are damaging your skin.

Do: Wear Sunglasses and Hats

The sunglasses should have UVA/UVB protection and they should wrap around and cover the sides as well as the front of the face. For hats, baseball caps do not cut it. Hats should shade your whole face and head.

Don’t: Wax or Exfoliate Right before Sun Exposure

Things like waxing or exfoliating, anything that causes inflammation or redness, should be done at least seven days before you go to the beach because if the skin is irritated from doing those things, you could burn more easily.

Also, avoid beauty products that could make your skin more sensitive, like alpha hydroxy acid.

Do: Avoid Retin-A Products in the Sun

Avoid Retin-A products when out in the sun. If you use Retin-A, it actually makes your skin healthier, but healthier skin is more sensitive to the sun. The thing to do is use Retin-A at night and make sure to put sunscreen on during the day.

If you want to fit into that bikini this summer . . . Who says that men and women need to train or eat differently to lose belly fat? The truth is that they do not. To be honest, one of the main reasons that so many women struggle to make progress is that they aren’t training the right way to increase their metabolic rate and trigger the proper hormonal response from exercise. To lose belly fat for women, they need to increase the hormonal response.

Do: Avoid Drinks with Lemon and Celery in Them

Lemons and celery contain psoralen, which is a photosynthesizing chemical. Just by touching them, you are making your skin more sensitive to the sun. You should avoid handling them or wash your hands after touching them when you are out in the sun.

Another Do: Buy [The Right] Sunscreen

Earlier this month, ABC News senior health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser said that one easy way to help battle the possibility of skin cancer is to lather on some sunscreen.

But with so many options out there, which should you get?

According to Besser, it’s best to look for sunscreen with the following ingredients:

Paba derivatives, salicylates and/or cinnamates (octylethoxycinnamate and cinoxate) to protect against UVB absorption. Benzophenones, such as oxybenzone and sulisobenzone, to protect against shorter-wavelength UVA rays.

Protecting against the rest of the UVA spectrum is Avobenzone (parsol 1789), ecamsule (mexoryl) titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Other chemicals that physically block the UVA rays are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. UVA rays are stopped from penetrating the skin by the other ingredients.

—————————————————————–

My Take: Well, due to my disability, I don’t need to worry about this too much because in the heat, I stay indoors. I do not spend my time working on model train sets, but I do work from home. My brother was the one that always wanted the model train set.

I do understand the need to protect against UVA radiation. Children should definitely wear UV protection during summertime; especially in Arizona mortgage over 110° in the summer. There are many natural skin care products on the market today that provide UV protection. If you want to get the best, contact your Miramar Beach plastic surgeon to find out more.

People in Arizona worry so much about the summer heat than they need to get one of those aromatherapy gifts sets to relax with. As long as you take care of your skin, you should be alright. Even a Destin Florida plastic surgeon would tell you that

Vigilance is Needed with the Economy on Mend Says New TARP Chief

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

A much-awaited program to cleanse toxic assets from banks balance sheets should be ready to roll out soon according to the new overseer of the US government’s $700 billion bank bailout plan. Progress has been made in developing public-private partnerships in an effort to pair investors and the government in buying poorly performing assets from banks was told to a Congressional Oversight Panel by Herb Allison.

“I’m confident that very soon we’ll be launching partnerships,” Allison said. In a wide-ranging exchange of questions and answers, Allison said there were signs the U.S. economy was on the mend but stressed there could be no let-up on recovery efforts.

“Our financial system and our economy remain vulnerable, with unemployment still rising, house prices falling and pressure on commercial real estate continuing to build,” he said. Allison also said that Treasury will “soon” publish guidance on how to value warrants that the government received when it injected capital into banks and that the banks are able to buy back as they regain stability and pay back the capital.

“We’ll soon be publishing on our website our approach to valuing the warrants and if it comes to that, disposing the warrants,” he said. The warrants to buy shares were intended to provide a means for taxpayers to share in the profits of banks that benefited from being able to draw on taxpayer-funded help.

Allison was confirmed by the Senate last week as Treasury assistant secretary to head the Treasury Department’s Office of Financial Stability, which manages the Troubled Asset Relief Program, known as TARP. Congress approved TARP last year under the former Bush administration.

He noted that about 30 companies that received cash injections from the government have repaid $70 billion and added that about $5 billion has been received in dividends on stock the government got in return for investing in firms.

Allison, a former chief executive of mortgage finance company Fannie Mae, replaces Neel Kashkari, who was appointed to head TARP by the former Bush administration. Kashkari carried over in the Obama administration until early May.

OPTIMISTIC ABOUT BANKS

Allison expressed confidence that so-called public-private partnerships to cleanse toxic assets from banks’ balance books will soon be launched. The partnerships are intended to pair private investors with the government to finance purchases of poorly performing mortgages and other holdings that might then be sold in the future at a profit while relieving banks of carrying them.

“We’ve made a great deal of progress,” Allison said. “It shouldn’t be long before we announce the first stage in that program.” Responding to questions, Allison said it was heartening to see increases in banks’ stock prices as well as rising confidence among financial sector participants since the government reported the results of “stress tests” on the adequacy of their capital levels.

“There are encouraging signs that the banking industry has been strengthening itself significantly,” he said. In May, the government announced the results of in-depth stress tests on the 19 largest U.S. banks. The tests were designed to gauge how the firms would weather more adverse economic conditions.

Since then, many banks have been aggressively raising capital by selling stock. Allison avoided a direct answer when asked whether the government might undertake the high-profile process of stress testing again, but with even tougher economic assumptions.

He said the administration’s regulatory reform plan calls for regular, ongoing stress tests of the nation’s biggest banks, but those tests will likely be part of the private supervisory process. Allison said he will review the controls over the use of the taxpayers’ money that funds TARP and try to make sure its operations are transparent so that people can see what is being done and why.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

My Take: I understand that banks and real estate are the major portions that run our economy, why don’t they talk about lowering prices. The high cost of products in this country is what makes it hard for people to spend money when they need to.

I remember in college when I took economics, one of the things my teacher taught us was about “turnover”. A business can more money in the “turnover” of a product, if they lower their price. For example, if a widget costs a business $10 to purchase and then sells it for $20, that is a $10 profit.

Of course, that $10 is not all profit. Part of that goes towards expenses of selling the widget. If it only costs a business $5 to sell a widget, then the profit margin is $5. That is the equivalent of a 25% profit. By lowering the price, the business will sell more widgets with a lower profit margin. However, if a business lowers the price of the widget and increases their order, which will usually lower their cost per item, they will be able to sell more in the “turnover”. See chart below:

Cost

Markup

Purchase Price

Profit/100

Markup/100

Profit/100/200*

Cost/item/100

As you can see the in the above chart, if a business maintains the same order and lowers their price, they will lose profit. However, if they increase their order, which will lower their cost per item usually, they will increase their profit by selling more. Simple economics! If more business owners would think like this, prices all over the country would go down and people would buy more!

Auto Insurance Consumers Switching Policies in Search of Better Insurance

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Cited: Insurance News

Most people who have a car have a dream of finding the perfect auto insurance policy at the best price. It will have the best coverage and they will save money in the process. The easiest way to fulfill that dream is by searching the Internet for auto insurance quotes. It is, after all, the best way to find a rate that will not cost you more and still get the benefits you want from an automobile insurance company.

Numerous consumers end up switching their auto insurance for the following reasons:

1. Auto insurance policy is too expensive — Today, one of the biggest reasons why people switch auto insurers is because their insurer’s premiums are becoming too expensive to afford. For years, auto insurance rates have been on the rise, but with the recession in full swing, premiums are rising even faster. The Insurance Information Institute reported that a typical auto insurance policy is expected to rise 4 percent this year. This increase comes on top of a 3 percent increase last year.

However, due to competition, auto insurance companies around the country are advertising competitive rates. According to MSNMoney.com, a report by Progressive Auto Insurance showed the significance in shopping around for insurance quotes; its study revealed that auto insurance rates varied across America between 1999 and 2004, averaging between $481 to $586. As consumers and policyholders become strapped for cash and organize their budgets, many are realizing the potential savings of doing business with an auto insurance company that has a lower rate on the same type of coverage as their original insurer.

2. There are “gaps” in their auto insurance policy — It is not uncommon for people to go to another auto insurance company because their policy no longer covers a certain circumstance, or a “gap in coverage.” To make matters worse, some people do not know that they have gaps in their auto insurance policy, until something happens to their vehicle. Once they file a claim, they are flabbergasted and enraged once their insurance agent, appraiser, or customer service agent explains to them that they no longer have coverage.

For those of you who have had a car accident and the legal advice or assistance . . . Millions are injured each year due to unsafe drivers. Today most automobiles are equipped with airbags and reinforce safety belts. However, these devices are meant to save your life and do not necessarily prevent injury. If you are hurt in a motor vehicle accident, you need to contact the New York City car accidents lawyer as soon as possible. On a side note if you have a relative or friend in a nursing home who you think is being abused, contact a NYC elder care attorney.

3. Relocation — Whether they are moving to a suburb, city, or out of state, policyholders may choose to relocate at anytime. However, the rates of different auto insurance companies vary by location. For example, auto insurance rates in a suburb are usually higher than rates in a city. Moreover, because more people use cars in California than they do in Wyoming, rates will be higher in California.

4. Bad service — Sometimes, it is not the policy itself that causes people to leave their auto insurance company for another one, but the employees who run it. Sometimes, it is just bad customer service and professionalism, whether it’s miscommunication or inexperience. Nevertheless, bad service makes policyholders look for another insurer that will serve them better.

Lowering the Chances of Swapping Auto Insurance Policies

Sometimes, a policyholder’s best solution is to drop auto insurance coverage for a better one (relocating, for example). However, in many cases, hopping around from auto insurer to auto insurer can be avoided, if people take time to practice these tips:

1. Shop online for auto insurance quotes to compare auto insurance companies for the best coverage at a low rate

2. Check their auto insurance policy annually for any gaps in coverage, and talk with their car insurance agent on a regular basis

3. Research the auto insurance company and search for their credibility through the Better Business Bureau, before doing business with them

4. Investigate their car insurance agent, by contacting their state’s attorney general office.

My Take: In my opinion, if you truly want to save money on auto insurance, get rid of your car. You’ll save money and gas as well. However, this article is right on one point, searching the Internet will give you the best options to choose from. You should also realize that you could get discounts for taking an educational driving course such as semi truck driving course NY. You can even take in NY online defensive driving class to get your discount. You might want to check with the DMV NY if you live in New York to find out what kind of discount you may be eligible for.

The Internet allows you to compare prices and benefits of each insurance company that you research. You may not find everything you want in one automotive insurance company. However, you will find one that will fit at least 90% of your needs. You need to make sure though that understand exactly what your needs are.

I suggest that you take a sheet of paper and write down everything that you want in your insurance policy. Then put at least three columns next to that list. As you do your research, check off each one on your list in a column for specific company. Yes, this visual aid will help you in making your decision. Don’t forget to check locate discount you get for taking this safety courses for driving. Good luck in your search!

New Study Shows Women Find It Difficult to Look at Babies with Facial Defects

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Cited: AP Medical

It is amazing that women have a harder time than men looking at babies with facial defects in a puzzling new research study. Psychiatrists are now studying perceptions of beauty and expected women to spend more time than men admiring extra cute photographs of babies. However, the study that was published raises more questions than it could answer with the psychiatrists from the Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, which is home to the nation’s oldest and foremost research program in a psychiatric hospital setting.

Some of the most significant discoveries in the field of psychiatry have been made at McLean, shedding new light on the causes of and treatments for many complex neuropsychiatric disorders. To this day, no other psychiatric hospital or university department of psychiatry contains a comparable range of basic laboratory, brain imaging and clinical research facilities dedicated to the study of major brain disorders. McLean’s nationally prominent research programs are devoted to clarifying the roots, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses that affect millions.

First the background: The McLean team already had studied men and women looking at photos of adults’ faces on a computer screen. They rated facial beauty, and could do various keystrokes to watch the photos longer. A keystroke count showed men put three times more effort into watching beautiful women as women put into watching handsome men.

For those who may be looking for a plastic surgeon . . . Many people will contact the Destin Florida plastic surgeon because beauty is different things to different people. For many, it is our exterior reflection of self satisfaction, self confidence, and inner peace. Sometimes an accident, health issues, or even an unfortunate gene can leave a flaw on appearance that robs this inner peace and mars the beauty inside and out. This is when Florida plastic surgeons come to the rescue.

Lead researcher Dr. Igor Elman wondered what else might motivate women. Enter the new baby study. This time 13 men and 14 women were shown 80 photos of babies, 30 of whom had abnormal facial features such as a cleft palate, Down syndrome or crossed eyes. Participants rated each baby’s attractiveness on a scale of zero to 100, and used keystrokes to make the photo stay on the screen longer or disappear faster.

Women pressed the keys 2.5 times more than men to make photos of babies with the facial abnormalities disappear, researchers reported in PLoS One, a journal of the Public Library of Science. That’s even though they rated those babies no less attractive than the men had.

“They had this subliminal motivation to get rid of the faces,” said Elman, who questions whether “we’re designed by nature to invest all the resources into healthy-looking kids.”

Both genders spent equal time and effort looking at photos of the normal babies. The study couldn’t explain the gender disparity. Elman noted that previous work has linked child abandonment and neglect to abnormal appearance, and even asked if the finding might challenge the concept of unconditional maternal love.

That’s too far-reaching a conclusion, cautioned Dr. Steven Grant of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which funded the study. The work is part of broader research into how we normally form attachments and what can make those attachments go awry, work that tests if what people say matches what they do.

“Common sense would tell you one thing,” Grant said. “This doesn’t fit with common sense. It raises a question.”

The paper suggests that the findings may have clinical implications in terms of predicting potential for abuse and neglect of children.

The Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Elman, said because the study involved a small numbers of subjects, it needs to be repeated with larger follow-up studies. These future studies should also involve brain scans of the subjects to help pinpoint how men’s and women’s brains function differently when viewing the images as well as extending or shortening the time period they view the images. The study, which also involved researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania, was funded by grants from the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

My Take: To me it seems natural for anyone to look away from a child’s face that is disfigured. Guys always seem to like the grotesque so them looking away would be surprising to me. Women, on the other hand, whether they are mother or not, would look away because it is a possibility for them.

I think the reason it touches when more is because women are the ones who have babies and the thought that a baby can be born with facial disfigurement is almost too personal. I think it has something to do with the maternal instinct in women. Of course, not all women have a strong maternal instinct and they would probably not look away.

I believe there are very few women that would not look way from an image of an infant with a severe facial deformity. I think it has to do with the thought that maybe they could have a child that looks like that and it is not something that any parent would wish for. It is natural for women, and men, to wish for an perfect baby every time. Who has not seen a new mother or father counting all the toes and fingers of their newborn?

U.S. Textile Factories Hurting with Illegal Yarns from Central America

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Cited: ApparelNews.net

Businesses being complicated by the dwindling world of US yarn mills for US and Central American knitters that try to comply with the complicated regulations of the DR-CAFTA. According to Keith Dartley, president of Swisstex Direct in Los Angeles, the marketing and sales arm for Swisstex California and Swisstex El Salvador, it is getting harder to find a steady supply of U.S. yarns that can be delivered to his company’s knitting operations in El Salvador in a timely manner.

Stowe used to supply about 30 percent of Swisstex’s yarn in El Salvador, and Ramtex provided another 10 percent. Now Swisstex El Salvador is using ring-spun yarn from primarily Parkdale Mills and Wellstone Mills. However, Swisstex is finding that with fewer U.S. yarn suppliers, delivery times are getting longer. For high-quality, ring-spun yarn, shipments take about one month to arrive.

“There are retailers who are expecting faster delivery than ever right now. You don’t know what is coming [in terms of orders] until it shows up, and then you are scrambling,” Dartley said. “I’m concerned that when business gets stronger again, the delivery times will go up further, and at some point, there may not be enough yarn for delivery.”

Under DR-CAFTA, U.S. manufacturers have an option to buy Central American yarn if U.S. yarn is unavailable. But that option is tricky because much of the local yarn is already committed to local knitters and garment makers. “They will only sell you yarn if they have excess capacity, which is hard to plan for purchasing,” Dartley explained.

Once the yarn prices began dropping, and textile executives began looking carefully at the supply chain, the true story of the cheap yarn began to unravel. NCTO’s Johnson said illegal yarn importers made mistakes along the way by filing false paperwork. Through shipping records, textile experts unearthed that yarn was coming into Miami from Asia, being relabeled as U.S. yarn and then sent off to Central America.

Parkdale’s Nation said one of the main culprits is a shell company called Yarns America, whose Web site says it is based in Lawrence, N.Y., and has plants in North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. Its total capacity is listed as 526,400 spindles, which seems amazing when compared with Parkdale’s capacity of about 250,000 spindles,

“Yarns America doesn’t exist,” Nation said. “The amount of yarn they produce is supposedly more than us, but we had never heard of them. We would know them if they existed.”

Several calls to Yarns America resulted in the same phone message saying that “all lines were presently busy,” even when the calls were made at 8 p.m. (New York time). Textile executives told the House panel that it was frustrated with U.S. Customs and Border Protection doing very little to resolve this problem.

NCTO’s Johnson said his group has met regularly with customs officials, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office and the U.S. Department of Commerce but has become aware that the government lacks the resources and personnel to battle the complicated issue of transshipments. The number of trade-preference claims reviewed last year, Johnson said, was only 1,500 of approximately 1.5 million claims made under the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Andean Trade Preference Act and CAFTA.

However, Janet Labuda, U.S. Customs’ director of textile and apparel policy and programs in Washington, D.C., said her office has made trade-preference claims an enforcement priority. Last year, she said, customs collected $5.5 million in fines for denied trade-preference claims.

“We are certainly trying to work with domestic industry to address their concerns and allegations,” Labuda said. She added that by the end of this fiscal year, Sept. 30, customs will have conducted factory inspections in every CAFTA country to ferret out transshipment’s and false claims. “We are doing our best to ensure appropriate enforcement of our textile laws,” she said.

But textile executives want to see more. They are hoping Congress passes a Textile Enforcement Bill to allocate new resources, money and tools to help customs deal with this issue.

NCTO would like to see more import specialists working at the nation’s principal ports, particularly in Miami; Los Angeles; and Long Beach, Calif. The textile industry believes there needs to be more trade verifications done by customs inspectors, more training for textile and apparel import specialists, and a rapid-response team of apparel and textile import specialists created at the ports to target fraud outbreaks.

“If we can catch a few of the bad guys, it most likely would make a big difference with the rest of them,” he said. “We are working hard to save American jobs and revenue for the government. I don’t know what is wrong with that.” Fraudulent goods should be seized instead of fining those that commit the crime according to Parkdale’s. Laws concerning import of apparel and textiles needs to be changed so that customs can help prevent future problems such as this.

________________________________________________________________________________________

My Take: If these illegal yarn importers are making so many mistakes, then it should be easy to stop them. The quicker they stop them, the quicker it will help the economy. Too many people are out of work as it is, not to mention the price is going up.

The price of yarn may not be very important to many people, but to crafters is very important. Even to apparel manufacturers it is be important. Yarn is also used in mass production of various pieces of clothing like sweaters. Those manufacturers also employ hundreds of people who also purchased yarn and sweaters.

Yarn is also used to make wholesale headbands for infants and toddlers. The less yarn that is available for less handmade gifts you can buy for your little girl. That means that beautiful flower hat that she wants may not be available. However, you can still find vendors online where you can purchase a hair bow or baby headbands at your leisure.

Man Confesses, He Kills People for Money

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Cited: Associated Press

Just hours after being arrested in a suburban alley, Vincent Smothers told an investigator, “I don’t have a profession,” he said calmly. “I kill people for money.” He then told the police in detail, how he accomplished in murders he was hired to commit. He first stalked his victims before shooting them at close range. Apparently, he killed while talking on his cell phone and shot others as they appeared to lay lifeless on the ground.

Even in Detroit, which had more than 300 slayings last year, Smothers’ case is notable: Rarely is one person charged in so many deaths. On Friday, his lawyers planned to ask a judge to have the confessions thrown out, arguing he was worn down while in custody. Police deny it.

“He’d been accused of doing so many, he just wanted to get it over (with),” said Detective Sgt. Ken Ducker of the Michigan State Police. Police say the work paid $60,000 over two years, although Smothers did one job for as little as $50. All but one of his victims were involved in drugs. The exception was a police officer’s wife.

At 6-foot-1 and less than 150 pounds, Smothers said he didn’t raise suspicion, according to a police account of the confession. He was able to walk up to two Chicago men in town for a drug deal in May 2007 and ask if they needed help with their car, which was parked with the trunk open near an interstate.

“He said, ‘Naw, young fellow.’ … Once he turned where he couldn’t see me, I pulled the pistol out and shot him in the head,” Smothers told police.

He said he fired through the windshield and the passenger window while the other man tried to honk the horn to attract attention. Smothers changed weapons without hanging up the phone with the man who hired him. The pay: $15,000.

For those who are seeking legal assistance . . . If you are thinking of divorce, you will need a NJ equitable distribution lawyer that is devoted to the needs of families including divorce, separation, custody, child support, and alimony both in the initial phase as well as for post judgment relief. With a good family lawyer, you could also get help with wills and estates, estate planning and probate.  However, I doubt that a Bergen County family lawyer will be using LA court reporting services. Of course, you never know, those same court reporting services LA may be based in New Jersey. You can find either on the Internet that provide services countrywide.

His last alleged slaying-for-hire was Rose Cobb, the 47-year-old wife of a Detroit officer, on the day after Christmas 2007, according to the confession. She was sitting in her van outside a pharmacy when Smothers, wearing a ski mask, broke a window with a tire iron and shot her in the head.

“My stomach was in knots,” he told police. “I felt like she was innocent. … All the rest were dope dealers.” Smothers said Cobb’s husband, David Cobb, arranged the killing while having an affair. The sergeant was never charged but hanged himself in September.

The confessions were evidence at a series of hearings over the past year where judges found probable cause to put Smothers on trial. Police also have tapes of the interviews.

Defense lawyer Gabi Silver doesn’t dispute the words but claims Smothers, 28, was coerced with promises that his wife would not be charged with helping him.

“The interrogation was extremely long and unfair. … The confessions were the product of duress,” Silver said in a recent filing in Wayne County Circuit Court, where Smothers faces six trials.

He spent nearly four hours in April 2008 confessing to Cobb’s death, then went on to talk about the other killings, chief investigator Ira Todd said. Smothers seemed remorseful.

“I knew at the time these crimes were committed, they were wrong and that there would be a price to pay,” he wrote. “After Cobb’s wife, I could no longer have anything to do with murdering people. “I can’t bring them back,” Smothers wrote, “But I hope this will allow their families to know that someone is going to pay behind what happened to their loved ones.”

Judge Craig Strong began hearing testimony last month until appeals were made concerning police testimony. On Friday, July 17, it was reported that Judge Strong had resumed hearing testimony over confessions made by Vincent Smothers who has been described as a “killer-for-hire” in eight different Detroit murders. His lawyer, Gabi Silver, claims that the police coerced him after hours of interrogation to confess and has requested that the statements be thrown out.

Apparently, the judge has disagreed and began hearing Officer LaTonya Brooks on Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court. Vincent Smothers is facing 6 trials on 8 fatal shootings based on his confessions that police say were detailed and voluntary. The confessions also state that he was paid $60,000 over a two-year period.

My Take: I do not think I will ever understand how anybody can take the life of another. Apparently, the pay must be good. He definitely did not need employee payroll services. Although, he probably could have utilized online payroll services to get paid. Seriously, I really do not understand. Life is such a precious thing.

Life is hard, money is tight, but that does not make it right for someone to take a life for money. I do believe he did the right thing in confessing. Although, he was misguided in the idea that he was only killing bad people. I am very sure that there are a lot of bad people that should not be living right.

Maybe taking the life of an innocent person made him realize what he was doing wrong. The ironic thing is he could still have been a killer by going into pest control. He could have been killing all kinds of things, bugs that is. However, using roach killer may not have given him the same satisfaction or the income, it still would have been killing. He could have been using do it yourself pest control and still make money.

Megan Fox Says Sexy is Part of “Transformers”

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Cited: Reuters

Do you know who Megan Fox is? You should! Very few people knew she was two years ago. However, now that she has starred in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” she is among the hottest actresses in Hollywood. Her sex appeal has one millions of fans to her. Many of her peers want to avoid the label of “sex symbol” because it might overshadow her talent. However, Fox deals differently since the “Transformers” sequel debuted last month.

She thinks being sexy has its advantages. It helped get Fox her start in 2007’s original, big-budget action flick “Transformers” from director Michael Bay, and that has led her to her other parts where she is now achieving what she set out to do in Hollywood — become a real actress.

“Women in movies, in general, are sexy — especially in Michael’s movies. And if you want to make movies that people want to see, that’s part of it. That’s part of the formula,” Fox told reporters at a recent news conference. Bay, who was sitting with her, chimed in: “It’s called summer fun. It’s a robot movie.”

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is based on the popular toys and cartoons about shape-shifting cars which morph into “autobots” that fight alien “decepticons” who want to control Earth. In the 2007 movie, the decepticons got thrashed in the final battle. Now, they’re back to avenge their losses.

The effects-filled movies are aimed mostly at young men, and with that in mind Bay hired the attractive brunette from Tennessee to co-star as the movie’s main love interest, Mikaela Banes, who favors tight jeans and even tighter t-shirts.

OPENING SHOT, OPENING DOORS

Bay, ever willing to indulge fan tastes, has made sure Fox’s first appearance in “Revenge of the Fallen” has an impact. As Mikaela, the lanky actress is filmed from behind, sprawled on a motorcycle in hotpants and motorcycle boots.

“We got that first shot out of the way, just to get it out for the young boys…and moved on,” Bay said. Before 2007, most of Fox’s work had been small parts on TV and in movies, but fan buzz from the smash hit “Transformers” ($700 million global box office) catapulted her to stardom.

“The movie, its success and how well it was received has opened a lot of doors for me, career-wise,” Fox said. Fox wants to be more than just a pretty face in Hollywood’s next big action flick, and when “Transformers” “opened a lot of doors” for her, she took advantage.

For those who want to look as good as Megan Fox . . . You might try using organic natural skin products to gain that youthful look. Organic and natural products offer purity, quality, and effectiveness. They do not contain potentially harmful chemicals like pesticides and herbicides. A beauty products manufacturer creates these using minimal production processes that do not use petroleum waxes, fillers and harsh synthetic chemicals found in many conventional products. So, why not try Hugo naturals with a company that has cosmetics development outsourcing to make yourself look better?

Now, to look that good Megan Fox must use the Alexander Technique classesin Manhattan. Either that or she does exercises with Pilates. Both of which can provide excellent exercise and relaxation. The Alexander Technique teaches you how to relax and use your body the way it should be and a Pilates fitness program with DVD can teach you how to do exercises, that are very similar, on a mat.

She will soon star opposite Oscar-nominees Josh Brolin and John Malkovich in sci-fi Western “Jonah Hex”, due to hit theaters later this year. In September, she headlines supernatural comedy “Jennifer’s Body”, penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (”Juno”).

“I’ve been able to be a part of films I don’t really feel like I deserve to have been a part of,” she said, in a nod to her lack of experience. But what Fox can’t quite get her head around, is the price of fame — constantly being hounded by paparazzi and press.

“Being photographed at Whole Foods, or like coming out of Rite-Aid with your shampoo bottles and stuff, that’s new to me,” Fox said.

Cast members, Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Isabel Lucas, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Julie White, Kevin Dunn, Anthony Anderson and Matthew Marsden, were all seen at the event. They were joined by director Michael Bay, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as Paramount Pictures toppers Brad Grey and Sumner Redstone.

The cast members were not the only Hollywood stars to be at the premiere actors Emile Hirsch and Brenda Song, TV personalities Kim Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari and Kendra Wilkinson and Travis Barker among others who went to to the premiere.

My Take: It is always nice to see a rising new star take on the paparazzi. The paparazzi can drive you absolutely insane. If she can ride that roller coaster and still be herself, then she is a star in deed. I saw the first “Transformers” and enjoyed it very much. However, I have not had a chance to see the sequel.

I have found that many times sequels do not measure up to the original movie. The sequel, however, seems to be one of the rare ones. Everybody is talking about it and saying it is better than the first movie. With my finances being tagged I may not be able to go to the theater to see it. I will just wait and do a movie download.

I belong to one of those Internet companies where you can get downloads of movies from low fee. So when I am ready I will go to my free movie downloads and get the sequel. In fact, if I don’t have the patience to wait for the download, I may just watch online.

Federal Reserve Policymakers reconsidering Economic Revival Programs

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Cited: AP Economics

Federal Reserve policymakers are actually considering whether some programs that are meant to drive down rates on mortgages and other consumer debt should be slowed down because the fragile economy is beginning to improve. A meeting of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues in June did not launch any new efforts according to most economists. Many on Wall Street fear that the efforts that beds are using to get out longest recession since World War II could bring on inflation in later years.

“Injecting additional money into the banking system is a pretty dangerous game right now, and the Fed cannot afford to press on the accelerator amid a potentially inflationary environment,” said Richard Yamarone, economist at Argus Research.

Wanting to snuff out any rise in inflation expectations, the Fed could opt to tweak its already-announced programs to slow down purchases of either government debt or mortgage-backed securities. Doing so also could help avert possible market disruptions and make it easier for the Fed to reel in these programs once the economy rebounds.

In March, the Fed launched a bold $1.2 trillion effort to drive down interest rates to try to revive lending and get Americans to spend more freely again. It said it would spend up to $300 billion to buy long-term government bonds over six months and boost its purchases of mortgage securities. So far, the Fed has bought about $177.5 billion in Treasury bonds.

The Fed is on track to buy up to $1.25 trillion worth of securities issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by the end of this year or early next year. Nearly $456 billion worth of those securities have been purchased. But slowing down the purchases carries risk, including that rates on mortgages and government debt could rise more than expected, which could hurt the economy’s prospects for emerging from recession, economists said.

A recent run-up in rates on mortgages and Treasury securities, if prolonged, could choke off prospects for an economic recovery. Some of those fears were eased last month, when rates on 30-year mortgages dipped to 5.38 percent after a string of weekly increases.

Meanwhile, the Fed is all but certain to hold its key bank lending rate at a record low between zero and 0.25 percent when the meeting concludes and probably through the rest of this year, economists said. That means commercial banks’ prime lending rate, used to peg rates on home equity loans, certain credit cards and other consumer loans, will stay around 3.25 percent, the lowest in decades.

For those who are looking into small business financing . . . A lender needs to understand clients’ needs and be able to offer an alternative at an affordable price. They should offer business cash advance at considerably lower rates than the national average for credit card receivable financing. Financing should typically costs clients 60-80% less than the competition. Plus, you should be assured you are working with a company with integrity. There is one financing company in the industry that discloses complete financing information on their website. They also offer merchant cash advance as well as small business loans.

Bernanke has predicted the recession will end later this year. Some analysts say the economy will start growing again as soon as the July-September quarter as the Fed’s actions so far, along with the federal stimulus of tax cuts and increased government spending, take hold.

There have been signs of some improvements: home sales have firmed: construction activity has picked up - albeit off record-low levels; consumer spending has stabilized following a massive cutback at the end of last year; layoffs are slowing and some credit stresses have eased.

Even after the recession ends, the recovery is likely to be tepid, which will push unemployment higher. The nation’s unemployment rate - now at 9.4 percent - is expected to keep climbing into 2010. Acknowledging that the jobless rate is going to climb over 10 percent, President Barack Obama said Tuesday he’s not satisfied with the progress his administration has made on the economy. He defended his recovery package but said the aid must get out faster.

Some analysts say the rate could rise as high as 11 percent by the next summer before it starts to decline. The highest rate since World War II was 10.8 percent at the end of 1982. An index measuring chief executives’ business expectations showed an improved outlook from last quarter’s record low, but many still expect declines in sales, jobs and capital spending.

“We don’t see continued free fall,” Ivan G. Seidenberg, chairman of the Business Roundtable and CEO of Verizon Communications, said Tuesday. “But nobody’s ready to suggest they’re going to begin hiring.”

The weak economy, so far, has kept a lid on inflation. Consumer prices inched up 0.1 percent in May, but are down 1.3 percent over the last 12 months, the weakest annual showing since the 1950s. Bernanke and other Fed officials don’t think companies will be in any position to jack up prices given cautious consumers, big production cuts at factories and the weak employment climate.

Obama said in June that Bernanke was doing a fine job under difficult circumstances, but he declined to say whether he will reappoint the Fed chairman in January. Bernanke took over the Fed in February 2006 after serving as President George W. Bush’s chief economist. His term will expire early next year. Bernanke - a student of the Great Depression who spent most of his professional life in academia - has elicited praise and controversy for his radical efforts to lift the country out of recession and end the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.

My Take: I think they need to put in some price freezing measures, like on gasoline. Last year at this time we were pain over $4 a gallon. Yeah, the price went down by half, but it is going back up again. Every time you turn around the price is going up on something.

Economically, I think the price on all food products should be frozen. My reasoning is very simple, the food prices go up and people do not have enough money so they ask for a raise. If their company gives them a raise, the company passes that expense on their clients. Some of which happen to be their employees. It is nothing but a vicious circle.

I remember my grandmother tell me that in 1935 she bought a house for $3500. She owned that house when she died. The house sold for over $200,000. That is about 6 times its original price. I guess it is just the world we live in now. The increasing shortages of materials to build with or manufacture items causes the price to go up. All passed down to the John Q. Citizen who passes it on to their bosses by requesting raises who passes it right back to John Q. Citizen. Like I said, it is nothing but a vicious circle.
