Craigslist Help-Wanted Classified Ads

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Craigslist, an online city networking site, is a place where one manufacturer, Handi-Ramp, has recruited about half its new hires for last five years. In fact, it has become a very popular way to recruit staff for those who are battling to contain business costs.

Handi-ramp, a 35-man operation in Libertyville, Illinois that has been expanding and has revenue of roughly $5 million, has recruited sales and accounting staff from the grass roots site; just last week it placed a listing for a sales manager. The draw? The classified ads cost the maker of ramps, handrails and treads only $25 a pop.

“I have to admit I’m cheap,” says Thom Disch, the company’s chief executive. “I look at it as a good resource.”

Disch is not alone. While newspaper classified ad sales have fallen sharply in recent months due to recessionary cutbacks, Craigslist has picked up much of the slack. Its revenue is expected to increase more than 23 percent to over $100 million in 2009, according to one industry study. The privately held company does not reveal its results. Small to mid-sized firms facing shrinking budgets are heavy users of the site, which is believed to garner the bulk of its revenue from classified recruitment ads for everything from barhops to bikini-clad models.

“Craigslist has become a very cheap and effective way for small businesses to hire,” says Peter Zollman, principal at the AIM Group, the consulting firm that authored the study. “Given the price, there’s not a lot of reason to be wary of it.”

In AIM Group’s latest issue of Classified Intelligence Report, an industry update sent to classified advertising clients, Zollman predicts that Craigslist will generate nearly $60 million in help-wanted ads in 2009. In 18 U.S. cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., the site charges $25 per ad; elsewhere in the country, the service is free.

No wonder smaller companies are becoming increasingly savvy about how to use what once was viewed as a less-than-professional service leaned on primarily for part-time gigs and contract jobs. While across-the-board rate comparisons are tough to make, specific pricing examples are telling.

For example, a classified job posting in the New York Times begins at $395 for a single listing. That gives the buyer 30 days on the paper’s online site and a scant four lines of print in the Sunday print edition. Individual job listings on Monster, the popular Internet job board, start around $385.

For those who are having problems with their employer . . . If you are having problems with your job or employer you may need a NY employment attorney with a law firm specializing in enforcing the rights of employees that can preserve a fair, equal and just employment environment. You need a firm that has significant experience representing plaintiffs in all phases of litigation in all forums including New York State and federal courts, arbitration, and before both state and federal administrative agencies. You can easily find a law firm that has a New York harassment lawyer that will meet your needs online.

FRAUGHT WITH CHALLENGES

But using Craigslist remains fraught with challenges, including the deluge of responses that come from what is a no-cost service in many markets. The site is actually more effective for recruiters in regions where the nominal fee is charged, says Zollman; the cost serves as a deterrent to weed out some potential spammers, helping to legitimize its use.

Many businesses have worked out elaborate procedures to make Craigslist searches more manageable. In addition, not all searches are suitable for the site; they say they have better success with entry- to mid-level postings rather than searches for senior executives. And they’re much more apt to have fruitful results with jobs oriented toward younger, tech-friendly applicants. Even so, the process requires a lot more screening than most other methods of recruiting.

“Is it time consuming? Yes, it is and frankly that’s the biggest negative,” says Ronn Torossian, CEO of New York-based 5W Public Relations, a fast-growing U.S. PR firm with a staff of 80. 5W uses Craigslist as part of a multi-pronged recruiting effort that includes a host of other sites.

“There’s no question you get a lot of junk,” Torossian says, noting that one of the company’s best employees was recruited from Craigslist. “That’s the price you pay for paying $25 for an add versus $400.”

The added effort is paying off for many companies, who view it as a worthy sacrifice to help keep costs under control. Pastoral, an upscale Chicago-based food retailer with two stores that has been staffing up in recent months, has progressively shifted its recruiting efforts away from culinary schools to Craigslist.

“We’ve gotten some strong candidates out of there who have done well with us,” says co-owner Greg O’Neill. Several of Pastoral’s Craigslist recruits have started on the shop’s floor and moved into management positions.

“You can get a whole lot of responses - very, very qualified people in the industry with excellent resumes,” he says. “You also have folks with absolutely no background for what you are recruiting.”

Learning how to build screening procedures into a structure with few pre-existing rules is a trick that helps make Craigslist a manageable tool, says Tyler Hamilton, co-owner of The Juice Group, a small New York marketing firm.

Candidates who don’t follow the firm’s strict application procedures are eliminated up front, she says. Then Hamilton and her partner, Stephanie Miller, pre-screen the most promising hopefuls over the phone. “Because we are a PR and marketing agency you better be good at marketing yourself,” says Hamilton. “Here’s your chance to sell yourself.”

Business owners need to remember that Craigslist is not an employment service, if anything, it is like a newspaper and you get what you pay for. Although, it is a great opportunity for many businesses to cut costs when looking to hire new employees.

_________________________________________________________

My Take: I think Craigslist is a very useful and dangerous item to use. It just depends on what you are doing on Craigslist as to how dangerous it can be. I have seen Craigslist on the news once too many times for something that is bad. One such story, someone was selling a refrigerator that turned out to be stolen. I would be hesitant to buy used photocopiers from Craigslist because of this. Now, if there is a way to prove that the used copier I was interested in was not stolen, I would probably purchase it.

I definitely would never answer a personal ad on Craigslist. That one ad is asking for problems. You never know who wrote the ad or what kind of person they are. At least with a dating service, there is some kind of precautions taken before you even contact person.

For employers however, Craigslist does give them the opportunity to cut costs. However, they still need to be cautious when hiring someone from an ad on Craigslist. The reputation of Craigslist is still a 50-50 shot for just about everything. I am sure that one day, Craigslist will be a premier location various ads.

China Complains about US Bans on Chinese Imports

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Cited: AP Business

The United States and Europe have complained of unfair trade practices by China and now China is on the defensive by curbing its exports of industrial raw materials. To top it off, China has filed a challenge on the US banned of Chinese poultry. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has stated they are in compliance with Chinese trade commitments and that they are only meant to protect the environment.

The United States and European Union filed World Trade Organization complaints Tuesday accusing Beijing of unfairly favoring its domestic steel, chemicals and other industries by restricting foreign rivals’ access to key materials. China is a major supplier of several materials.

“The goal of the Chinese side’s policy on the relevant exports is to protect the environment and natural resources, and the Chinese side considers the relevant policy to be compliant with WTO regulations,” the ministry said in a written statement. It said Beijing hopes to resolve the dispute through dialogue in the Geneva-based WTO.

The complaints add to tensions over Beijing’s industrial policies that have been aggravated by the plunge in world trade. China has raised taxes on exports of coke, steel, fertilizers and other goods to curb the growth of industries deemed too dirty or energy-intensive and to ensure supplies at reasonable prices for domestic buyers.

The materials cited in the U.S. and European complaints include coke, bauxite, magnesium and silicon metal. China is the biggest exporter of coke, a fuel made from coal and used in steelmaking and other industries.

The communist government also has rankled some of its trading partners by trying to boost exports through tax breaks and other aid to Chinese producers, which threatens to pump more goods into already glutted global markets.

Analysts expect U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration to file more trade cases against China following his campaign promises to take a tougher approach with U.S. trading partners. Pressure to protect American jobs has mounted as the country struggles with its longest recession since World War II.

Both Beijing and Washington have imposed measures favoring domestic industries in their economic stimulus packages enacted in response to the global slowdown. China criticized Washington’s “Buy American” measure favoring U.S.-made iron, steel and manufactured goods in stimulus projects. Beijing announced its own “Buy China” requirement this month for projects to use domestically made goods wherever possible.

Beijing announced this week it will cut some export taxes July 1 but the goods affected did not include materials cited by the United States and Europe and it was unclear whether the step would mollify them. Taxes on fertilizers will fall from as high as 110 percent to 10 percent, on ammonia from 50 percent to 10 percent and on some types of steel girders from 10 percent to 5 percent. The announcement did not mention coke, bauxite or magnesium.

The WTO hearing process can take up to a year. If the U.S. and EU prevail and China refuses to lift its restrictions, the two would receive approval to impose sanctions equal to the harm suffered by their companies. Separately, the Ministry of Commerce said that Beijing has asked the WTO to investigate a U.S. ban on imports of Chinese poultry.

The two countries banned imports of each others’ poultry in 2004 following an outbreak of bird flu. Beijing lifted its ban after a few months and complains Washington has failed to follow through on a pledge to open its market to Chinese poultry exports.

“China’s poultry products cannot be properly exported to the United States, and this has hurt the legitimate rights of the Chinese poultry industry,” ministry spokesman Yao Jian said in the statement.

It said Beijing has asked the WTO dispute resolution mechanism to create a group to investigate the U.S. ban.

______________________________________________________

My Take: Everything that I have read so far about China’s complaint: and of Chinese poultry doesn’t say anything about why. I wonder why? The US has stringent rules of inspection for any food product that is regulated by the FDA. Apparently, China’s equivalent of the FDA is not so, how should I put it, attentive in its work.

As I understand it, the ban on Chinese poultry was because the FDA did not want diseased or infected poultry products entering the US that could potentially cause people to get sick. That is the job of the FDA! They made sure that meat and poultry products on the market are safe for consumption. The source I read on the Internet stated that the areas that the poultry was prepared were not clean and that meant that disease could easily infect meats.

Another reason for the ban was that the bird-flu turned up in Hong Kong poultry and they were selling it to the public. In December 2008, CBS reported about three dead birds that were found to have bird flu. Supposedly, about 80,000 birds were killed and destroyed because of this. According to this article, it seems that there have been outbreaks in 1997, 2001 and 2008. In an 11-year period, they have killed almost 2.5 million birds. No wonder the US put a ban on Chinese folk.

Even if they were giving away shopping bags with their poultry, I would not buy Chinese poultry. Not even fancy personalized packaging could make me pay for infected meats. I will stand on the side of the US and FDA as long as China has infected poultry.

D.C. Train Crash May Be Due to Computer Failure

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Cited: Associated Press

Investigators are now focusing on why a computerized system failed to stop an oncoming train, especially when evidence shows the operator did try to slow it down. When the train is operating in automatic mode, the operator’s main job is to open and close doors and respond to emergencies, which evidence shows that he did. Under automatic mode, the training is primarily controlled by the computer that failed to do its job.

Debbie Hersman, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said it was unclear if the emergency brake was actually engaged when Monday’s crash occurred. But the mushroom-shaped button that activates it was found pushed down in the operator’s compartment.

Hersman said it wasn’t clear when the button was pressed or how it got that way. She also said there was evidence of braking on the train’s rotors, indicating it was likely that the operator tried to slow down. The train plowed into a stopped train ahead of it at the height of the Monday evening rush hour, killing nine people and injuring more than 70 in the deadliest accident in the 30-year history of the Metro subway system.

Crews spent the day pulling apart the wreckage and searching for bodies. Authorities also worked to determine why the train’s safeguards apparently did not kick in.

“That train was never supposed to get closer than 1,200 feet, period,” said Jackie Jeter, president of a union that represents Metro workers.

All Metro trains were running on manual control following the crash as a precaution against computer malfunction. The cars in the moving train were some of the oldest in the transit network, dating to the founding of the system. Federal officials had sought to phase out the aging fleet because of safety concerns, but the transit system kept the old trains running, saying it lacked money for new cars.

Hersman told The Associated Press that the NTSB had warned in 2006 that the old fleet should be replaced or retrofitted to make it better able to survive a crash. Neither was done, she said, which the NTSB considered “unacceptable.”

Metro General Manager John Catoe said the agency expected to receive proposals “over the next month or so” to replace the old cars, but new trains were still years away from being installed. He insisted the existing cars were safe.

This is not the first time that Metro’s automated system has been questioned. In June 2005, Metro had a close call because of signal troubles in a tunnel under the Potomac River. A conductor noticed he was getting too close to the train ahead of him even though the system indicated the track was clear. He hit the emergency brake in time, as did the operator of a train behind him.

Shortly afterward, Metro attributed the problem to a defective communications cable. The signal relays that control trains were replaced after a serious safety warning in May 2000 by the Federal Railroad Administration. The warning came after failed relays were detected on the system, formally known as the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

The operator of the train that barreled into the stopped cars Monday was identified as Jeanice McMillan, 42, of Springfield, Va., according to Metro officials.

McMillan was hired in January 2007 as a bus driver and was tapped to become a train operator in January 2009, the NTSB said. McMillan completed training and began working as an operator in March. Metro officials say employees start out as bus drivers before moving to trains.

Investigators want McMillan’s cell phone and texting records to determine whether she was distracted before the crash, Hersman said. Safety officials also are investigating a passenger’s statement that the train had stopped briefly then started again before the crash.

Iyesha Thomas, a Metro employee who worked with McMillan, said McMillan would often work the late shift. She did not have a car and if she were unable to get a ride home, she would sleep at Metro’s offices, take the first train to Franconia, Va., and return to work later that day.

A neighbor, Aicha Mezlini, said McMillan was killed driving the first train on her 4 p.m.-to-11 p.m. shift. She said McMillan normally worked Tuesday and Wednesday, but last week Metro changed her shift to Monday.

“There is no evidence whatsoever that this driver has done anything to cause this accident,” Catoe said Tuesday.

The crash occurred on the red line near the D.C. and Maryland border, in an area where higher train speeds are common because there is a longer distance between stops. Trains can go 55 to 59 mph, though it was not clear how fast the train that crashed was traveling. Meanwhile, emergency crews cut away the top of the train that jackknifed on top of a stopped train. They removed the debris with help from a crane brought in overnight.

“The scene that I witnessed was one that no one should have to see,” Catoe said. “It was unbelievable destruction.”

Later, his voice choked with emotion as he addressed hundreds of employees at a prayer vigil. He told them the agency will find out what caused the accident and develop a solution.

“We cannot afford to lose any more of our own, or any more of our customers,” Catoe said. “I need your prayers. This agency needs your prayers.”

Metro has long pleaded for more funding to ensure the system’s safety. The transit network is supported by the District of Columbia, Maryland and the Virginia jurisdictions that it serves. However, unlike other major systems, Metro has no dedicated funding source. Metro officials have long argued that the federal government should contribute because the trains serve the capital, and some 40 percent of rush-hour riders are federal workers.

Catoe said last year it would take $7 billion just to maintain current service and keep the system running safely and reliably from 2010 to 2020. That includes replacements for aging rail cars.

It would take billions more, he said, to deploy longer trains and more buses to meet the projected increase in demand. The number of trips taken on Metro trains is expected to grow 22 percent to about 1 million a day by 2020.

Some passengers involved in Monday’s crash returned to the site Tuesday to get another look at the destruction. Jamie Jiao, 20, of Vienna, Va., said he was aboard the first car of the moving train just a few feet from where the car was smashed.

“It was only a split second,” he said. “We were probably traveling pretty fast. No one had time to react.”

Jiao had two bandages on his face, and his foot was in a splint. He was walking with a cane and complained of aches in his back. “I’m thankful it isn’t more serious,” he said.

Tijuana Cox, 21, was in the train that was hit. She had her sprained arm in a sling on Tuesday.

“Everybody just went forward and came back,” with people’s knees hitting the seats in front of them, said Cox, of Lanham, Md.

The last and only fatal crash in the Metro subway system was on January 13, 1982. That crash caused the deaths of three people in a derailment. January 13, 1982 was a very sad day for the capital. Earlier that day, before the subway crash, and airport plane had slammed into the 14th St., Bridge just after takeoff killing 78 people during a severe snowstorm when it took off from the Washington National Airport. Since 1982, there’ve only been 2 accidents within the Metro subway system. In November 2006, 2 track workers were killed by an out-of-service train because the operator failed to follow safety procedures. Another Metro worker was struck and killed in May 2006. Then in January 2007, a Metro subway train derailed in downtown Washington, that severely injured 20 people and trapped 60 others in the tunnel.

____________________________________________________

My Take: Hopefully, Metro has good predictive dialer software! Because there is one thing that is definitely going to happen, people are going to be contacting their call center to find out all the details. People are going to want to know if it is still safe to ride the Metro.

Where I live, trains are just becoming part of the Metro bus system. We have had a few minor scrapes, but nothing major. Knock on wood! These “bus” trains are so new out here that they only cover one part of the city. It will not be for another 20 or 30 years before it gets to where I live. I may not be around then to experience the “trolley” as they are calling it.

After hearing about this accident, I am not sure I want to even ride one again. I did ride the trolley in San Diego once. It was so crowded you could not even move, just like riding a bus. So I think I will just stick with the bus. I do not want to be one of those people that are searching for funeral urn for family members. At least they will not have to search for pet urns as well, it was bad enough losing a family member.

Wedding Bow Tips

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Many women today that are getting married are choosing not to have the traditional “white” wedding. The reason is simple; they want more color on the biggest day of their life. This also gives them a larger variety in choosing decorations such as wedding bows.

These same women are also choosing to wear hair bows that match the larger wedding bows that are part of their decorations. If you are one of these women, you need to match the color of your bows. You do not want to clash with the decorations. You also want to make sure that the size of the larger bows is appropriate for where they are put. Just make sure that they are not near any open flames.

If you are having an outdoor wedding, you also want to make sure that your bows are weather resistant. This will ensure that the weather will not ruin your decorations and if you cannot get to them right away. This is very important especially if you have a lot of wedding bells as part of your decorations.

You also want to make sure that you order your wedding bows and matching hair bows well in advance of your wedding day. You do not want to be missing something on your special day.

You want to make your selection of wedding bows and wedding decorations early so that your flower girls flower hat will match at least in color. You also do not want to forget the baby headbands for all those beautiful little babies that will be attending. You might even consider purchasing baby girl headbands for the babies of your bridesmaids with little bows attached. If none of your bridesmaids has any babies you could purchase wholesale baby headbands for those attending and then give them to babies as a gift of remembrance.

If you plan to keep the oversized bows from your wedding, you should put them in a large zip lock plastic bag or large lawn bag depending on their size. Then place them in a sturdy box that will prevent any crushing while they are in storage. This will help preserve them for years to come.

New Businesses Need Office Supplies

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

The one thing every new business needs is office supplies including office furniture, computers, ink, pens etc. Office furniture is a necessity for any office! You may want to consider modular office systems if you are just starting out. It might be a little bit easier on the budget.

Purchasing office products can put a huge dent in any business budget. Here are some suggestions that might help your new business:

  • You will need to allocate a certain area for storage. You do not want stacks of office supplies just lying around on the floor or on shelves. It could add up to an unsightly and distracting mess.
  • Make sure you order replacement supplies before you run out. A small purchase is a lot easier on the budget than a large one.
  • Keep the master list of all the supplies that you need on a daily basis. This will make ordering easier. That list should include the following:

Printer or ink cartridges Paper clips
Copier paper Pencils & Pens
Stationery Rubber bands
Envelopes Scissors
Note and message pads Staples & Staplers
Calendars Packing tape
Copyholders Scotch tape
Manila folders Glue
Markers and highlighters Bathroom and cleaning supplies

Depending on the number of people that are in the office, it might be a good idea to designate one person who will do all the ordering of office supplies. Not only is this less confusing, but also it is easier on the budget. You might also keep a record of items are used the most and purchase those in a bulk order.

You can either be general or very specific in your style or theme such as Victorian or Renaissance. Your San Diego CA wedding decorations will be chosen to reflect this theme or style. You also need to consider the difficulty in finding the decorations and party favors for your particular theme or style. For example, depending on your style or theme you may need to have your San Diego CA wedding chair covers made before the wedding and that could be expensive depending on how many people you invite.

Granite is a natural stone like marble, travertine, limestone and Onyx. Granite slabs make great countertops because they are durable and resistant to scratches and stains. Many people prefer granite tile countertops or marble countertops for their homes because of this. Even most homebuilders will suggest granite for houses or buildings because of its durability and resistance to heat, scratch, stain and spills.

Granite comes in a variety of colors and designs that can satisfy the taste and requirements of anyone. Granite has a natural beauty and allows the originality of natural stones to be seen. This natural beauty will add elegance to any kitchen or bathroom. Of course, granite does require special cleaning agents. Stage Lighting is Important for Any Event

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

There is something different about experiencing a live performance. Everything seems so alive. Getting to that point takes time. To get such an immaculate presentation, the staging crew needs to have the proper equipment installed. With the proper equipment, they get the best results from the performers rather than the audience.

Stage and aisle lighting are extremely important to the performance. The lights are extremely bright in most cases and are required to radiate performers’ facial expressions. If the audience cannot see these, it can detract from the performance. Aisle lighting is also provided near seating risers to guide patrons up and down the aisles, and to ensure safety during dimly lit performances.

Stage lights are available in varying wattage based upon the stage requirements. Apart from being set on center stage, they are often placed at the side wings, and even at special points where the audience is seated. Stage lights are also available in various colors. Apart from regular lights, these colored varieties are used to create special effects. Different stage lights are used during different scenes. Different colored lights on stage bring out different emotions, colors like red are used to bring out love and despair, whereas yellow lights are used to go back into memory lane.

Most stage lighting is extremely heavy and difficult to move. This makes lighting difficult when a performance is on the road. This stage is on the other hand, is very portable. A portable stage can have several bridge supports and a folding frame that makes for easy transportation. A folding bridge frame, also referred to as a C-Frame, is a functional frame that provides bridging between platforms. The frame folds flat, is self-contained and is available in fixed and adjustable heights.

A director may also place lighting on side screens when they need to light up a particular part of the stage or object on the stage. Even the audience has their own special lighting system in an auditorium. This is usually used so that the audience can feel what is going on in the performance.
